Then you would have to look at 2-3 years (if you have previous business experience, or 5-6 years without) before even turning a profit. It is impossible to compete with the big farms unless but a stroke of luck you have a horse that is named "Horse of the Year".

It is no longer wise to work hard for 40 years for a company and then trust that social security will be there to take care of you. The government has made to many promises that they can not keep. In the next few years the bill will come due, the US government will be expected to pay on some of the promises they made long ago, such as Medicare, Social Security and Federal Pensions. You need to be financially independent and not be dependant on the government or a company for life support.
